Lightweight Concrete for Hospitals: Floor Screeds, Roof Insulation and Fire Safety
Few buildings are as demanding as hospitals. Floors carry heavy equipment and services. Operating theatres, ICUs and wards run air-conditioning 24 hours a day. And every material has to be checked for fire safety.
Perlite India has laid perlite lightweight concrete at Jupiter Hospital, Indore, Jupiter Hospital, Dombivli and Chellaram Hospital.
Why hospitals choose perlite concrete
Lighter floors for heavy services
Hospital floors carry a deep build-up for services, and the fill in that depth is often a heavy mortar bed. A perlite concrete screed fills the same depth at a fraction of the weight, leaving more of the slab's capacity for equipment.
A level, hard base for any finish
Hospital floors are finished with vinyl, epoxy or tiles that need a smooth, level base. Perlite concrete is levelled with an aluminium straight edge to a hard, monolithic, table-top finish, and the flooring goes directly on top.
Partitions that change
Hospitals rearrange rooms over the years. Drywall tracks screw straight into a perlite concrete screed, without drilling into the structural slab.
Round-the-clock cooling
A hospital's roof lets in heat all day while the AC runs all day and all night. Insulating the roof with perlite concrete cuts that heat at the source. Every unit saved is saved every day of the building's life.
Non-combustible
Perlite concrete is made from an inorganic mineral and cement. It is non-combustible, unlike foam boards such as XPS, EPS and PU.

Frequently asked questions
Can work be done in a running hospital?
Yes, in planned phases. Perlite concrete is pumped or mixed close to the work area and laid quickly, which helps limit disruption.
Is it suitable under vinyl and epoxy flooring?
Yes. Once cured, it gives a smooth, level base. The flooring contractor checks moisture and surface readiness as for any screed.
Does it meet fire requirements?
Perlite concrete is non-combustible. Your fire consultant will confirm what is required for your building.
