Lightweight Podium and Terrace Garden Fill: Cutting Dead Load on Podium Slabs
Podium slabs in residential and commercial projects carry a lot: landscaping, paving, driveways, play areas, and deep fills to bring different levels up to one finished level. Those fills are often the heaviest thing on the slab, and the slab, beams, columns and foundations below are all sized for them.
The problem with conventional podium fills
Soil and brickbat are heavy and vary a lot from load to load.
Plain concrete is strong but very heavy for a non-structural fill.
Foam boards save weight but need a heavy screed on top and are combustible.
Perlite concrete for podium fills
Perlite concrete can be made across a wide density range. For podium fills, where the surface has to take paving and traffic, we use the heavier grades, above 1,600 and up to 2,000 kg/m³. Lighter grades go where the load on top is small, such as under landscaped areas.
Use on the podium | Typical approach |
Driveways, paving, fire tender paths | Heavier podium grades, 1,600 to 2,000 kg/m³ |
Landscaped and planter areas | Lighter grades below the soil and drainage layers |
Level make-up between zones | Grade chosen by the load on top |
Falls to drains | Formed in the same pour |
Why it helps the whole structure
Every tonne you take off a podium is a tonne that the transfer slab, the columns and the foundations do not have to carry. On large podiums, a lighter fill can make a real difference to the structure, and the structural consultant can account for it from the design stage.
On site
Pumped from RMC or mixed on site
Levelled to falls with a straight edge
Hard, monolithic surface for waterproofing, paving or the drainage layer
Zero settlement, so paving stays level
Frequently asked questions
Can perlite concrete take vehicle loads on a podium?
It is a non-structural fill. For driveways and fire tender paths we use the heavier podium grades, and the topping and paving are designed by your consultant for the traffic.
Is it suitable under landscaping?
Yes. A lighter grade can make up levels below the drainage layer and soil, taking weight off the slab.
Who decides the grade?
We propose the grade and thickness for each zone; your structural consultant approves it against the design loads.
